Extra curriculum opportunities
Sunderland College are delighted have recently hosted an Institute of Physics Science Ambassador Training Day, welcoming year 7, 8 and 9 students from across the region to gain a further insight into the world of Physics.
Dr Jenny Search from the Institute of Physics delivered the event, along with Dr Lorraine Coghill from Durham University. The College welcomed students from Sandhill View, Farringdon Community Academy, Biddick Academy, Seaham High School, Thornhill Academy and Southmoor Academy to take part in the training.
The day gave secondary students a chance to take part in team building activities, practical activities and confidence building, learning a range of simple physics practical’s which they can perform with inexpensive equipment. They also learnt mentoring skills so that they can explain and share the science aspect with others. The aim of this training day was to raise awareness of physics and in particular, engage female pupils in the subject.
Dr Marianne Hill, Sunderland College Curriculum Manager for Science said:
“We were delighted to host this event at Sunderland College. Some of our current A-level students were mentors at the event. This was an excellent chance for the students to learn practical as well as personal skills which will help to support their journey with Physics. It is great to see such fantastic young people with such enthusiasm for science!”
A-Level student Ethan Faulder said:
“It was interesting to see the younger pupils solve scientific problems. I really enjoyed leading my group of ten pupils and it has made me realise that I would enjoy being a teacher.”
A-Level student Caitlin Anderson added:
“It was encouraging to see so many pupils, from so many schools, working together on scientific problems. I enjoyed using my science skills in a different way and being able to explain to younger pupils how things work.”
With only around 20% of females progressing on to study A-level Physics, the College will be working with Dr Jenny Search in order to improve the gender balance of GCSE and A-level Physics within local schools.
