Public Services students visited Farringdon Community Fire Station to find out more about the range of career opportunities available within the fire service.
The students were given a tour of the station by manager Kevin Burns, watched Farringdon’s fire crews training and took part in a careers Q&A.
Being in a real-world environment was extremely beneficial to the students who were able to see first-hand the rescue drills, vehicles and specialist equipment firefighters use to keep the public safe when responding to incidents as well as prevention and community situations.
Chris McMahon, Uniformed Public Services lecturer, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to go inside a fire station and see what a firefighter actually does whilst carrying out their duties.
“It certainly highlighted the skills and behaviours needed to carry out these roles successfully and the fact that we got to see the firefighters taking part in real life training exercises was a fantastic experience for our students and certainly something they took a lot from.
“Kevin as always was great with our students answering questions and allowing us access around the station, we’re very grateful to him for allowing us to come along for the day.”
Student Lewis Duncan, added: “I really enjoyed the trip to the fire station and seeing the firefighters training was great. I’m looking forward to going back again soon.”
