Sunderland College’s Esports teams have made a AAA start to the Student Champs Winter Season after winning their opening two games.
The Sunderland Seers, captained by Chris Skinner and Nicholas Wilkinson, recorded dominant victories against Fife College in week one and then Confetti Arrows (Confetti Institute of Creative Technology) in vehicular soccer video game Rocket League
In Valorant, a first-person tactical shooting game, the Seers overcame Bolton Sixth Form and Leamington Spartans (Warwickshire College) to continue their unbeaten start.
Esports student Nicholas said: “We put in a lot of hard work preparing for the games and went into them determined to win and prove we are the best Esports teams this year.
“We are proud to represent our teams, Sunderland Seers and Sunderland College and hope to win more games this season.”
Sunderland Seers, made up of students from the college’s NextGen and Esports programmes, are the British Esports most successful team. The Seers will also compete in the Overwatch Student Champs which begins later this month and will hope to add to their double Championship Grand Finals win in 2020.
Lecturer and team coach and Chris Jeffrey added: “A huge well done to our Rocket League and Valorant teams, what as start to the season.
“They have been working hard, practicing and training, and their commitment, teamwork, and pride in representing Sunderland College saw them deservedly win the games.
“We’re excited for the rest of the season; we hope to go as far as we can in the British Esports Championships and hopefully reach the Grand Finals.”
Earlier this year, Sunderland College announced a unique new partnership with the British Esports Association (BEA), which will develop future talent and support Sunderland in becoming a global hub for Esports.
They will combine their expertise to offer young people and adults the opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge, and qualifications to prepare for a career in the rapidly growing Esports industry and be at the forefront of new developments.
The Esports courses will be delivered at a new National Performance Campus (NEPC) opposite the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, which will providing state-of-the-art facilities, training and investment that will support Sunderland, the North East and the UK in attracting and developing the world’s best Esports talent.
Students will have access to dedicated Esports classrooms, performance rooms, streaming booths, and an arena space. The new campus will also play host to regular Esports events, community tournaments and summer camps and will also be used as a training base for the GB Esports team.
NextGen students at Sunderland College recently presented a range of creative projects and products to industry experts at a special event.
