Sunderland College Ladies are North East Colleges Futsal Champions

Students who have taken part in a Futsal league during the winter period competed against many other North East Colleges in the region.

The futsal league is designed to minimise disruption to the Women’s league in winter months and was a great chance for the team to continue playing a game they love, but also to try a new sport to develop their skills.

Gary Sykes, Sunderland College Women’s Coach said:

“With the support of Durham FA & The North East College leagues, this opportunity would have not been possible. The players would have endured Wednesday without football due to the weather conditions. Playing futsal indoors has allowed the girls to maintain their interest but to learn a new sport. The incentive was to participate on a weekly basis and play against other colleges. Over the weeks the girls performed well, developed their understanding of how to play technically and tactically. Due to their positive attitude, they won their games finishing unbeaten in the league and finals.”

Emily Burton, Year 1 Sport Student added:

“The futsal league was a great way for the girls and I to meet and play against other talented players in the area. It allowed us to play different styles of football throughout the winter, which also allowed us to go on and maintain our undefeated run which I’m hopeful we’ll be able to continue for the rest of the season.”
