Sunderland College students were recently given the chance to spend time with Britain’s elite amphibian fighting force, the Royal Marines Commandos.
The students took part in fitness sessions and water-based exercises on the River Tyne in Newcastle which mimicked the Royal Marines’ disciplined training.
The Commandos also talked about their personal experiences and the opportunities available in the armed forces, providing an insight into the skills which need to be demonstrated during the recruitment process.
Student Chantelle Beaney, said:
“Training with the Royal Marines was very good. My favourite part of the day were the boat exercises. I would love to do it again.”
Chris McMahon, Lecturer in Uniformed Public Services, added: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience first-hand the roles and responsibilities of the Royal Marines.
“It certainly gave them an insight into their work; the students had a fantastic time and the exercises were fun and engaging.
“The ‘Meet the Marines’ team only visit our region once a year and we are very grateful to the Marines for allowing us access and for being so open with our learners.”
