A Sunderland College student’s atmospheric photograph titled ‘My Lamp’ has been showcased in a special exhibition to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust called on young people, aged 14-25, to submit a photo which celebrates the people, groups, places and objects which bring us and others together in times of darkness.
Creative and Business Industries student Callan Simkins was one of hundreds of young people from across the country who sent in inspiring and thoughtful photographs, with his black and white image of his bedroom lamp selected to feature in an exclusive digital exhibition of the best images.
Speaking about his submission, Callan said: “In times of darkness, I use my lamp to light up my room. It also makes me feel safe.”
The photos related to Holocaust Memorial Day 2021’s theme ‘Be the light in the darkness’ and gave a unique insight into what has been the light for young people in the UK during times of darkness.
The competition was ran by GirlGuiding, Scouts, National Union of Students and Union of Jewish Students, and judged by an expert judging panel including acclaimed photographer and director, Rankin; esteemed sculptor and Holocaust survivor Maurice Blik; Labour MP and HMDT Trustee Tulip Siddiq; and Holocaust Memorial Day Trust CEO, Olivia Marks-Woldman OBE.
