Creative Arts students experience the culture of Berlin

Sunderland College Photography, Graphics and Fine Art students recently visited Berlin to experience the culture along with taking part in gallery visits and creative activities.

The students had the opportunity to visit a range of world-class photography and art exhibitions, impeccably curated.

Photography students saw the work of renowned photographers such as Robert Capa, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Erwin Blumenfield, Helmut Newton and Saul Leiter as well as work by the film director David Lynch.

Art students had the chance to take in a broad range of modern sculptural work, video installations, and amazing paintings from the history of art. German Dada artists such as George Grosz and Hannah Hoch were a particular highlight. They also had the opportunity to experience a graffiti street art workshop.

All students also had the challenging but insightful opportunity to visit the Topography of Terror, permanent exhibition highlighting the history of the Holocaust.

Robin Cowings, Sunderland College Lecturer said:

“The student’s horizons were broadened by this visit. Not just in their experiences of art and how it connects with their curriculum, but culturally too. Some students had not flown or travelled abroad before. Experiencing Berlin and a culture similar, but very different to ours too was a really positive and enriching experience for all.”

The visit has helped the student to experience a range of different artists and examples of work which they can channel into ideas for coursework research.
