Extra curriculum opportunities
Year 13 A-Level students took part in the prestigious Royal Society of Biology’s British Biology Olympiad 2018 and returned to college as medal winners.
This year a total of over 7,800 students participated in the competition and were tasked with completing two online papers.
Sunderland College students Daniel Deary and James Drinkald won a gold medal each, Nathan Beckett and Nathan Usher both won silver, and Eve Green won bronze. In addition, four other Sunderland College students were awarded Highly Commended and three Commended.
Gemma Willis, Biology Lecturer at Sunderland College, said:
“Our students did fantastically well to achieve such a high number of awards and commendations, which is testament to the hard work that the students have put into their studies. Their knowledge was tested beyond that of the specification they are covering at A-Level and they excelled at the challenge.”
Eve Green, A-Level Biology student and bronze medal winner, said: “I would like to study adult nursing at university and I entered the competition as a way to demonstrate my knowledge in biology and gain another qualification.”
Kind-hearted students at Sunderland College have donated hundreds of selection boxes to disadvantaged children across Wearside.
