Sunderland College TASS student-athlete Tia Anderson was named as a finalist in the Remarkable Achievement (Junior) category at the Northern Echo Local Heroes Awards.
Tia was nominated for her outstanding performances for Durham City Harriers, including breaking Olympian Allison Curbishley’s long-standing North East under-17 300m record.
Despite narrowly missing out on the award Tia, who suffered from Achilles tendonitis as a child, believes the nomination is a significant milestone and recognition for her hard-work.
Speaking at the award ceremony at Wynyard Hall, Tia said:
“Although I did not leave with the award, I have gained many other experiences and being shortlisted was an achievement in itself.
“In 2020 my main aspirations include gaining my first England vest, reaching the national finals and keep my place among the UK’s top 20 runners.”
Carl Jones, TASS Dual-Career Coordinator, added: “Tia is an outstanding individual who has whole-heartedly embraced being a student-athlete after making the transition from secondary school to her time with us at Sunderland College.”
