Children from families in need will be able to enjoy Easter eggs this year thanks to thoughtful students at Sunderland College’s sixth form.
A-Level students at Bede Campus are giving back to their local communities by collecting 100 Easter eggs which will be donated to Sunderland Food Bank to pass on to parents receiving benefits and on low incomes who have been hit hardest by the recent rise of bills and cost of fuel.
With 75 chocolate eggs already donated from classmates, teaching and non-teaching staff, they are on target to reach their target with a week of the appeal remaining.
Criminology, Law and Sociology student, Neive, said: “With the rise in the cost of living, some families just won’t be able to afford to buy luxury items such as Easter eggs. Everything is going up, but people’s wages aren’t.
“I work with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and with Christmas, Easter and birthdays there are just so many things for people to afford.
“Despite this, a lot of children wouldn’t understand why they didn’t get an Easter egg and so we wanted to do something to put a smile on their faces on Easter morning.”
Mia, who is studying Psychology and Criminology, added: “We’ve collected for the Food Bank before and just wanted to do something different to help parents who maybe can’t afford to buy Easter eggs.
“It’s sad to think some children might not get an egg on Easter morning and so hopefully we’ve done something which will make them happy.
“It’s about giving back to the community. It’s not just an effort from students, but staff too.”
Fellow student Molly, believes young people have an important part to play in helping others, especially given the difficult situations facing people around the world.
She said: “It’s good to see not only students but their families and staff getting involved.
“There’s a lot of bad things at the moment and so it’s vital we all do what we can to help make a difference to people’s lives.”
Criminology lecturer, Dan Gibson, added: “I’m really proud of the students who are engaged in the issues affecting society and what is happening around the globe. They are driven to give something back and be part of their communities.”
