Preparing you to progress
Sport and Exercise Sciences and Sports Massage Therapy students once again provided sports massage support to the runners of two charities at this year’s Simplyhealth Great North Run.
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science and Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy students supported The NSPCC and The Children’s Foundation who had many runners take part in the event. The runners were rewarded with a deep tissue massage at the end of the race.
The Great North Run was a fantastic event for students to be involved in, it has enabled them to gain first-hand experience in the industry they want to progress into and have them real life skills in working with amateur runners at one of the biggest sporting events.
Paul Brown, Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Sciences and Sports Massage Therapy at Sunderland College said:
“I always love taking the massage therapy and sports science students to the Great North Run. The runners are raising huge amounts of money for charity and it is very rewarding to provide them with much needed massage support at the finish line. The day is very busy and the students are flat out massaging as many runners as we can and gaining lots of massage experience in the process. It’s such an excellent occasion to be a part of, the atmosphere along the run and at the charity village at the finish line is electric. It is a very enjoyable and worthwhile day for all involved.”
Rachael Brown, Level 3 student in Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences continued:
“It was a fantastic experience for all, I didn’t stop all day! The charity village was filled with runners and volunteers and the atmosphere was really good. My hands were sore the next day off all the massages, but it was a great opportunity and very rewarding to treat the charity runners.”
Debbie Croll, fundraiser for the Mass Participation Team added:
“The massage therapy students from Sunderland College were excellent again this year and the response from our runners has been very positive. The students volunteered as masseurs for our team of 278 runners, most of which returned to our marquee for a massage!”
