Sport students visit Teesside University to examine contemporary issues related to football

Sport and Exercise students recently visited Teesside University to attend a conference examining the contemporary challenges in football culture.

The conference brought together social science researchers and football practitioners to explore the contemporary challenges facing the people’s game and the opportunities to address these challenges. Guest speakers included the chief executive of ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, chief operating officer of Middlesbrough FC and a Premier League and Championship football agent.

This conference was a great opportunity for students to be part of a professional and thought provoking discussion regarding professional football and its importance in social science. The Sport and Exercise students complete a ‘Current Issues’ unit within their second year. The information discussed at this conference can be used within their assessed work.

Paul Brown Course Leader of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Sunderland College said:

“When Teesside University approached the college looking for high aspirational learners to be part of such an interesting and though provoking conference I thought this would suit the coursework and tasks we set our Sport and Exercise Science students here at Sunderland College.”

Dominic Kendle, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences Student added:

“I really enjoyed the conference. Especially listening to the football agent who gave a great insight into Premier League football behind the scenes regarding player’s wages, transfer deals and sponsorship talks.”

Teesside University also expressed their thanks:

“Thank you to all participating colleges. We hope you enjoyed the conference and gained valuable information from the guest speakers at the top of their field.”
