Fantastic experience
Students at Sunderland College’s City Campus show great Christmas spirit in their fundraising efforts.
A project led by Travel and Tourism students at Sunderland College’s City Campus has exceeded all expectations in raising vital donations for local charity North East Homeless (NEH.) The students chose the charity as they wanted to make a difference to the lives of local people most in need at this special time of year.
NEH is a charity which works tirelessly to assist with the prevention or relief of poverty anywhere in the North of England by providing or assisting in the provision of material items. The donations ranged from food and chocolates, to toiletries and sanitary products, all of which are much needed in hard to reach parts of our community.
Students Lauren Calvert, Cody Forster and Katrina Hedley along with lecturer Kelly Mounsey, met with charity trustee Liz Jenkins today to hand over the impressive haul from the last three weeks. Liz said, “This is amazing! It is absolutely outstanding what the students have achieved and it really highlights that people really care about poverty and homelessness here at the College.”
Lecturer Kelly Mounsey said, “We’ve been blown away by the response that we’ve had in such a short time on this project. We initially set a target to provide twenty care packs, and we’ve absolutely smashed that target thanks to generous donations from staff, students and local businesses like Blacks Corner.”
It is such a difficult and challenging time during the hard winter months for those facing homelessness and poverty, and the hard work doesn’t stop here, Kelly added, “It was great to see everything being handed over ready to go to a great cause this morning, but this is just the start. We will continue to work with NEH in the new year, we’ll be looking for donations of clothing and coats in January, and I’m sure we’ll have great success once again.”
Liz and the team of outreach volunteers at NEH will be handing out the donations received to those in need on Christmas Eve.
