Cresswell Pele Tower Restoration Project

Extra curriculum opportunities

Students from our City Campus were recently involved in a working partnership with Groundworks NE on the restoration project for Cresswell Pele Tower.

The 15th century, medieval tower is situated near Druridge Bay and the aim is to restore the tower so it can be opened to the public.

A group of Pathways students from the college were involved in the project, the visit helped to form part of their voluntary section for Duke of Edinburgh as well as heloing to boost their work readiness skills.

The students were able to engage in volunteering and understand the benefits of projects like this. They are now able to appreciate local heritage and the importance of preserving such areas and landmarks. The project will be ongoing throughout term 3 with students volunteering at the tower to support with clearer the area and make footpaths.

Emma Iley, Sunderland College Lecturer said:

“The students were highly engaged in the project and enjoyed finding objects that dated back to when the Cresswell family lived there, they showed great commitment throughout the session and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.”

Makenzie Anderson, Pathways Level 1 Employability Programme student added:

“I loved digging the area as I found lots of different things that dated back to the Victorian times. We all had a great time.”
