Sunderland College’s Extended Leadership Team has pledged to increase its campus-wide activities to help more students with SEND gain employability skills and work experience.
The students, who have a wide and varied range of learning difficulties and disabilities, will be offered work experience opportunities to help raise their aspirations, inspire confidence and develop their understanding of the world of work.
A large number of flexible opportunities will be available, including placements in Front of House, Administration, Caretaking, IT, Governance and Policy, Catering and Marketing teams across all campuses.
Vikkie Morton, Vice Principal of Student Services, said:
“Work experience is an important part of a young person’s journey towards employment, and young people with SEND can sometimes face real challenges gaining meaningful experience of being in the workplace.
“Just 6% of people with a learning disability have a paid job, yet 60% can work.
“By making this Pledge we reinforce our commitment to offering outstanding learning opportunities to all our students and help them realise their aspirations of paid employment.”
