What’s it all about?

This qualification is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the construction industry specifically as a crafts-person in bricklaying.

A bricklayer has the skills and knowledge to build or repair walls in accordance with construction plans. They may also build or refurbish arches or other structures, therefore they play an important part in any construction team.

You will gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are important when you are working as a bricklayer or wishing to progress to further learning and training in this area.

You will need 2 GCSE's at grade 4-9 including Maths and English. Or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

19+ please enquire You will need to provide your own stationery and you will be given the opportunity to take part in trips and visits. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a necessity in all practical workshop sessions and you need to provide your own PPE, however you will be directed to a supplier that the college uses. More information will be provided on enrolment.

You will be taught using a range of teaching techniques including:

Workshop activities, classroom sessions, working as part of a team, using IT, tutorials, and development of other skills.

Throughout the course you will be assessed on your bricklaying skills in the workshop and knowledge tests will take place in the classroom periodically throughout the year to ensure learning is taking place and linking practical to theory.

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to further studying or employment.

You are required to have achieved a grade 4 in English and Maths to enrol onto this course.

Throughout the course, maths and English will be embedded into lessons where applicable.

You will study up to a possible 19 hrs hours a week in college, but you will also be expected to learn outside of college to enhance your learning experience. You will be given a timetable upon enrolment.

As part of your qualification you will take part in an industry placement of up to 30 hrs.

The aim of the course is to prepare students to enter the industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification.

The qualification is made up of several units to study:

- Principles of construction
- Building cavity walls
- Building solid walls and piers
- Constructing basic arches
- Setting out buildings

What’s next?

Upon completion of the level 2 course you could progress onto a level 3 in Bricklaying, you could apply for an apprenticeship, or progress onto a T Level in construction. The course would also help with gaining employment within the construction industry.
